Passing Sequences into 3v3 Transition Game

Session Description:

This session builds fundamental passing technique through paired work and triangle patterns, progressing into dynamic small-sided games. Players will develop accurate passing, movement off the ball and quick transitions between attack and defence.

Ball Mastery (6 mins)

  • 1 min = Toe taps
  • 1 min = Sole rolls (alternate feet)
  • 1 min = Inside touches side to side
  • 1 min = Pull backs
  • 1 min = Foundation moves (L-shapes, inside-outside)
  • 1 min = Freeplay – encourage different surfaces of foot

Passing in Pairs (10 mins)

Setup: Players in pairs, 5 yards apart.

Activity:

  • Pass and receive using inside of foot
  • Focus on firm passes to partner’s feet
  • Receiver takes one touch to control, second touch to pass back

Progression:

  • Increase distance to 8-10 yards
  • Add movement – pass and move to a new position
  • Two-touch maximum

Coaching Points:

  • Inside of foot for accuracy
  • Look at target before passing
  • Receive across body to set up next pass

Triangle Passing (12 mins)

Setup: Groups of 3, arranged in triangles 8 yards apart with cones.

Activity:

  • Player 1 passes to Player 2, follows pass
  • Player 2 receives, passes to Player 3, follows pass
  • Player 3 passes to Player 1’s new position
  • Continuous rotation

Coaching Points:

  • Weight of pass – not too hard, not too soft
  • Move after passing
  • Communicate with teammates

3v3 Transition Game (12 mins)

25×20 yard pitch with mini goals at each end. Teams of 3 play for possession. When team scores, they immediately defend the opposite goal with quick transitions between attack and defence.

Coaching Points:

  • Quick decision making
  • Support teammates with passing angles
  • Recognise when to pass vs dribble
